Te Atatū AFC at the Auckland International Cup

Te Atatū AFC was proudly represented at the recent U9–U12 Auckland International Cup held at the end of the school holidays.

Our U11 team, coached by Keenan Brightmore, made it to the Gold Cup quarter-finals, finishing in the top 8 out of 24 teams—an incredible effort against some of the best teams in the country!

We also had an U10 team, coached by Martin McVeigh, who had a brilliant tournament campaign—taking out the Silver Cup! 🥈💪

Here’s a summary from Coach Martin:

At the last minute we decided to create an U10 team to enter the U9-U12 Auckland International Cup, a four day tournament made up of teams from some of New Zealand’s biggest clubs and academies.

The team was made up of players from three of our regular U10s teams and came together at short notice but made a formidable team.

In a very tough group we won our first game against Espanyol Academy 4-0 before suffering defeats against Nelson Suburbs and a strong Auckland United team. We then lost to Fencibles Utd Navy in a knockout match which put us into the Silver Cup.

This was where we found our form and won our quarter final 6-0 against a team from West Coast Rangers. A nervy semi final followed against Espanyol academy again, in the end it finished 0-0 and went to Sudden death penalties. Both teams saw their first spot kicks saved before Jack O’Neill Fuller coolly slotted home and that was followed by a miss from Espanyol.

In the final against a strong team from Cambridge we excelled and dominated the match, having two goals controversially disallowed before finally being awarded a penalty for a handball. Jack again stepped up to score and some strong defence saw us hold out to win 1-0.

The boys were very happy to have represented Te Atatu AFC and to bring home their first ever trophy
